Article of the Month: Chocolate For Heart Health
With heart disease the number one killer in North America, it is time everyone consider prevention. There has been much talk of flavonoids in the news lately. What are they and why should we care?
Flavonoids are compounds that give fruits and vegetables their colour and they are powerful antioxidants. Studies like the one in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association have shown that flavonids are helpful in protecting against heart disease and circulatory problems as well as several other health concerns.
Some sources of flavonoids are berries such as blueberry and bilberry as well as red wine. There is one source that is getting more attention these days - Chocolate. Pure cocoa is rich in antioxidants. Some studies show it is even higher than red wine and green tea. Before you stock up on your favorite pink, mystery filled chocolates or candy bars, keep in mind that it is the purest darkest chocolate that has the greatest health benefits. At Pioneer Health Foods we carry a wide variety of organic dark healthy chocolate. You can choose from plain dark chocolate bars (Cocoa Camino, Health by Chocolate) or ones with a supplemental dose of Omega 3 (Bija bars with Udo's Choice oil). While these delicious treats have health benefits, overindulgence is not recommended. Choose a variety of different sources of flavonoid, antioxidant rich foods.
